Family Photo

This picture is of my family on our vacation this past summer. It is important to me because it was my first vacation since my parents divorce. Not having my mom there with me was very different.
We were tired from a long day at the amusement park and decided to take a break and sit down on the bench. My neighbors had gone the same day as us and she said "let me take a picture this would make a good family picture". The photo focuses on the people that are in the picture rather than what is going on outside. Inside the picture is my dad, my two brothers, and me. It was a scorching hot day so we were in shorts, and a light colored shirt. Walking sneakers were a must. All of our hands are visible except my dads, he has them resting on the back of the bench. Our whole body's can be seen. My dad has sunglasses on the top of his head and there is a bag at his feet. In the background you can see fences, posts, rocks, some buildings, and trees. There is part of a flag pole towards the middle of the picture. If you look closely there are train tracks behind where we are sitting. The grass is green, the flowers are bloomed and the sun is gleaming down on the ground. We are all looking towards the left. My older brother and I are smiling while my dad and younger brother are half smiling.
The picture was taken so my family and I were the main focus. Outside of the picture there were many people walking. Roller coasters and a water park are all around us but not seen in the picture. Other benches were to the left and right of us. Some places to eat were in front of us. The train is not visible. The picture is cropped  leaving out the sky, the flag, and top half of trees.

Perspective

In class, we took pictures from different angles and points of view. Perspective changes the way I see myself. The picture looks different from different views. The picture to the left was taken straight on. The picture to the right was taken from a birds eye view. In the picture to the left, you can see my whole body. By the way my head is facing one may think I could be looking at something. You can only see half of my face and can see that I have a straight look on my face. In the picture to the right, it is taken from up above. You can only see the upper half of my body. You cannot really see my face because of the angle. By the way my arms and hands are positioned one may think I am concentrating on what is going on in front of me or I am tired and resting. As one can tell many things can be thought based on expression and body language. Each position and expression has its own meaning and therefore there will be different views based on what the individual thinks. Personally, I like my pictures taken straight on like the first one. I like being able to see expression and my whole body.

Assignment 2

Audience: Classmate
Topic: Painting 1
Argument: "When in power one does not care about the feelings of others around."
Evidence: What we see, feel, and main points

In class, we examined the painting “Olympia” and pulled out information we thought was important. Based on what we saw, how we felt, and the main points that grabbed our attention, we were able to gather some evidence. With the evidence we noticed, we were able to come up with an argument. When in power one does not care about the feelings of others around.

In the painting, there is a white woman lying naked on a bed with her legs crossed. The lady is wearing heals and is propped up on her elbow. The woman has a flower in her hair. The woman has a bland look on her face.  At the end of the bed is a black cat. The cat is standing on all four legs. It is dark in the corner where the cat is, therefore making it hard to see the cat. By the way this was painted, I get the vibe that the woman is cocky. She looks as though she is looking above me rather than at me. Having her elbow propped up and the cat standing may symbolize that she has power over others. Her facial expression shows she does not care about what else is going on in the painting because she is already above them. I feel frustration when looking at the woman lie there on the bed and people serving her.

Kneeling on the floor beside the nude woman is a black woman. The woman’s face is barely visible. All you can see is a few small details like her eyes. She is holding a bouquet of flowers in her hand. The darker woman is looking down at the white woman. The darker woman looks as though she is bowing down to her. This may represent slavery. The darker woman is serving the white woman. The painting makes me feel uncomfortable because slavery is not a good thing. The nude woman could do something about it but because she has power over others she does not care, she is where she wants to be.

When looking at the picture my eyes immediately went to the white woman lying down. This is due to the fact that it had the most color. Everything else in the painting was dark. My eyes also went to the darker woman beside the bed because I was curious as to what she was doing.  After looking at the painting more deeply, I thought of slavery. The darker woman is the white woman's servant. By the look on the white woman’s face, one can tell that she has power and does not care about the well-being of others around.
